History of Thang Long Water Puppet Theater
The form of art now known as Water Puppetry began in the 11th century in the villages of The Red River Delta. Originated in the rice fields of northern Vietnam, the puppet show was at first about farming and harvesting rice during the first years. Back then, the performers stood in the water of ponds or the rice fields to perform using the puppets. They made the puppets out of wood and lacquered them so that water would not ruin them.
In times of flood or harvest, the performance would be related to the events of the day, and as time passed, other acts were performed to entertain the people. As of today, one of the popular shows that can be seen in the Thang Long Water Puppet Theater is the story of the Legend of The Hoan Kiem Lake and the Restoration of The Sword.
Other stories can also be seen, which are all related to the importance of rice and farming in the history of Vietnam. You can also learn a lot about the folk-lore of this country by watching these shows.
