Delve into the Secrets of the San Callisto Catacombs
The catacombs of San Callisto are part of the so-called Callistian complex, an area of about 30 hectares between the Via Appia Antica, the Via Ardeatina and the Via delle Sette Chiese, in Rome, which houses various funerary areas and catacombs
The catacombs arose towards the end of the 2nd century, with some private Christian hypogea and a funerary area directly dependent on the Roman church. They take their name from the deacon Callisto I, appointed by Pope Zephyrinus to administer the cemetery itself. Having in turn ascended the papal throne, Pope Callistus I enlarged the funerary complex, which soon became the official one of the Church.
