Tour Plan
The Svaneti Tour is your chance to explore some of the most iconic places located in Georgia. For example, you will visit Dadiani Palace and Enguri Dam as part of the tour.
The Dadiani Palaces History and Architecture Museum is considered to be one of the most eminent palaces in Caucasus. Three palaces form the modern museum complex, parts of which are also Blachernae Virgin Church and Zugdidi Botanical Garden.
The Dadiani Palaces display important cultural heritage items from Georgia. The Tagiloni treasure, the Mother of God holy vesture, and the icon of Queen Bordokhan are included. Queen Bordokhan was the mother of Queen Tamar. The collection also features manuscripts from the 13th and 14th centuries, miniatures, and memorial relics of the Dadiani dynasty.
Additionally, there are objects related to Napoleon Bonaparte. These items were brought to the palace by Achille Murat, the husband of David Dadiani's daughter. Achille Murat was the grandson of Napoleon's sister, Caroline Bonaparte.
The Enguri Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Enguri River in Georgia. Currently it is the world's second highest concrete arch dam with a height of 271.5 metres (891 ft). It is located north of the town Jvari.
Mestia is a small town in northwest Georgia. It sits at an elevation of 1,500 meters, or 4,921 feet, in the Caucasus Mountains. Mestia is located in the Svaneti region.
Historically and ethnographically, Mestia has always been regarded as a chief community of Zemo, or Upper Svaneti province.
The population is mostly Svans, a cultural and linguistic subgroup of the Georgians. Even though it was small, the town was an important center of Georgian culture for centuries. It has many medieval monuments, like churches and forts, that are on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
Svan towers are famous defensive buildings in the Svaneti region of Georgia. They were built between the 9th and 12th centuries.
They were used for homes and defense. They helped protect against invaders and avalanches.
Typically attached to family homes, each tower has multiple floors connected by narrow ladders and trapdoors. The thick walls and narrow windows made them resilient fortresses.
These towers are a testament to the region's feudal past, where families and clans relied on them for security. Their unique design and cultural significance have made them UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The towers represent the strength, resilience, and independence of the Svan people. They have kept their language, traditions, and architecture alive for centuries. Visitors to Svaneti are drawn to the stunning mountain views and the medieval buildings. These structures stand as quiet guardians of history.
The museum was founded in 1936. It holds historic artifacts from the Svaneti region. These include unique icons and engravings.
The museum also has a rich collection of manuscripts. Visitors can see medieval weapons and ornaments made of iron, silver, and copper. There is also jewelry, pottery, and textile items.
Ethnographic artifacts show ancient life in Svaneti and more. You will be able to learn more about history and ethnography.
The ground floor of the Michael Khergiani museum displays personal items of the famous climber Michael Khergiani. He was a Merited Master of Sport from 1932 to 1969. The museum was opened in 1983, at that time Georgia was part of the Soviet Union.
In the collection, you will find climbing gear, clothing, photos, awards, and gifts. This includes several musical records by Vladimir Vysotsky and a song he dedicated to the famous Georgian climber. It is highly recommended to visit Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography and Khergiani House Museum.
Hatsvali Ski Resort is located in Svaneti about 8 Km away from Mestia. The highest altitude above sea level is 3248 meters. Nevertheless, it is quite easy to reach Hatsvali ski resort from Mestia.
Mestia and Hatsvali are connected with each other by the automobile road and the six chair ski lift. However, Mestia-Hatsvali ski lift is closed in summer, and travelers will need a car for transportation. Besides, there is no public transport in the region.
The road from Mestia to Ushguli is a unique experience itself. This area is now part of the Mestia Municipality in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region.
Ushguli is a group of five villages at the top of the Enguri gorge in Svaneti, Georgia. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Upper Svaneti.
Ushguli is one of the highest places where people live in Europe. Ushguli is not as easy to reach as more developed towns like Mestia. This has helped keep many of the village's unique features.
Ushguli is one of the highest populated villages in Europe. The ethnographic museum here is a two-storey building from the 13th century. It is a Svan-type structure made of limestone.
This building is called the Machub Hall. Its roof is covered with flat slate stones, which are common in traditional Svan construction. Both floors are preserved in their current form.
The Ushguli church of the Mother of God, also called the Lamaria church, is a medieval Georgian Orthodox church.
It is a simple hall church, with a projecting apse and an ambulatory. The interior contains two layers of medieval frescoes, in a state of deterioration. The church is inscribed on the list of the Immovable Cultural Monuments of National Significance of Georgia.
As part of the Svaneti Tour, you will visit other historical places, such as the Martvili Monastery and Prometheus Cave Natural Monument.
Prometheus Cave Natural Monument is a karst cave in Georgia. It is located in the Tskaltubo Municipality of the Imereti region.
Georgian speleologists discovered and studied the cave in the early 1980s.
It is part of a large cave system, united by one underground river. Right now, researchers have studied about 30 km of the river. This is roughly half the length of the whole cave system.
In 1985 the conversion of the cave into a sightseeing tourist destination began. By 1989, a walking path was created in the cave that stretched for about 1 kilometer.
Stairs and paths were built, and a 150-meter tunnel was dug at the exit. Construction of ground-floor buildings also began. The cave was equipped with temporary lighting, and small groups of tourists started to visit.
As stated earlier, you will have the chance to visit various historical places as part of the Svaneti Tour.
Martvili Monastery, located in the Samegrelo region of Georgia, is a historic and spiritual landmark dating back to the 7th century. The Georgian Orthodox monastery sits on a hilltop. It offers views of the green countryside. The monastery is known for its peaceful atmosphere.
Gelati is a medieval monastic complex near Kutaisi in the Imereti region of western Georgia. Gelati was built during the Georgian Golden Age. King David IV of Georgia founded it in 1106. UNESCO recognizes Gelati as a World Heritage Site.
